Magnesium stearate is an additive commonly found in rubber, plastics, pharmaceuticals and many other products. Created when sodium stearate reacts with magnesium sulfate, it is also known as octadecanoic acid and magnesium salt. To support a wide range of potential applications, Acme-Hardesty manufactures magnesium stearate in kosher, NF and polymer grades.

Uses & Applications

Magnesium stearate is used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical tablets, nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals. In these applications, it serves as an anti-adherent, excipient, mold-release agent and lubricant. It is also used in the processing of rubber and plastics as a de-dusting agent and lubricant. In food and beverage manufacturing, it is a flow enhancer, binder and anti-caking agent, as well as an important component of hard candies and baby formula, among other things.

Product Characteristics

Magnesium stearate can be derived from both animal fats and vegetable oils. At Acme-Hardesty, our product is entirely plant-based, as well as GMO- and residual-solvent-free. At no point do we test any of our products on animals. We also strive to ensure our magnesium stearate is free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, fish, gluten and other common allergens. Storage and Handling Recommendations

Acme-Hardesty offers magnesium stearate in bags as a fine white powder. It poses an explosive dust risk if not handled in a properly ventilated environment. The melting point of magnesium stearate is between 130 and 150ºC. It will remain stable under normal storage and transport conditions, but you should keep it away from sparks, open flames and sources of heat. Wear protective gloves and an appropriate respirator at all times.
