Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acid (HTFA) is derived from animal sources such as rendered beef fat or mutton. The hydrogenation of fatty acid refers to a chemical process where hydrogen is added to achieve saturation.

Hydrogenation consists of three components: the unsaturated tallow fatty acid, the hydrogen source and a catalyst that stimulates the desired reaction, typically a metal such as nickel or palladium. The hydrogenation of the tallow acid may be partial or complete, depending on its intended use. Distillation is the final step in the fatty acid hydrogenation process.

Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acid is white to light yellow in color while at room temperature, although the color will vary depending on the type and extent of the hydrogenation process. HFTA also emits a faint odor. Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acids have a freezing point of between 45-55 ° C during partial hydrogenation and 57-60 ° C when full hydrogenation occurs. HTFA is generally considered to be a safe material — it is unlikely to cause health issues when inhaled or when coming in contact with the skin, although ingestion could cause slight irritation of the digestive tract.

Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acid is known for its remarkable versatility, which makes it a common additive in a wide range of products. HTFA is used as an intermediate in lubricants and rolling oils, an emollient in personal care products, and an emulsifier in a variety of applications. It is commonly used as a stabilizer in plastics, a thickening agent in waxes and as a binder in various buffing compounds.

Acme-Hardesty offers Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acid in tallow, flake or liquid form in a variety of packaging options. Uses & Applications

The multiple uses of Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acids include:

  • Personal Care: HTFA can enhance the performance of many types of personal care products by acting as an emulsifier, surfactant, emollient and cleansing agent in soaps and shaving creams.
  • Lubricants and Greases: Tallow acid can serve as an intermediate, processing agent and additive to lubricants, greases and rolling oils.
  • Plastics: Many plastics manufacturers use Hydrogenated Fatty Acids as a stabilizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a synthetic plastic polymer used to manufacture pipes, electric cables, clothing, furniture and other products.
  • Waxes: Another common Hydrogenated Tallow Fatty Acid application is as a thickener/hardener of the wax used in crayons and candles, as well as a binder in buffing compounds.
